TuftScope In Focus: Obesity Is Still A Global Worry

Obesity in the United States and in other parts of the world has been an increasing threat to public health during the past several decades. Despite numerous initiatives cropping up both domestically and abroad, the rate of obesity has shown few promising signs of positive change. Several recent studies suggest more drastic measures are needed to halt the growth of the single leading cause of preventable death in the world.

We are happy to announce our website is up and running once again! We apologize for our hiatus and inactivity on the web. While we are still working on improving our site, we encourage you to reach out to us for any help in navigating the site, or any inconveniences you experience.

While we were away, we certainly were not inactive. Here's what you missed while we were away:

-In the spring of 2013, we were awarded with the Tufts University Synergy Award for our Winter 2013 special issue, in which with worked with EPIIC and the Institute for Global Leadership. We built on our success with a subsequent collaboration with the One Health Initiative and the Pre-Health Collaborative for the Spring 2014 issue merited a second nomination.

-Throughout the spring of 2014, we also worked with the Tufts University Emergency Medical Services in their panel discussing emergency care during the Boston Marathon bombings.

Our Fall 2014 issue has just been published, and we encourage you to read through it and participate in our online discussion. Follow us on Facebook to get updates on our work. Outside submissions will be due March 1 for our Spring 2015 issue.

On February 3, 2011 Mayor Joseph Curtatone of Somerville spoke about ShapeUp! Somerville. ShapeUp! Somerville is a nationally recognized program, lauded by Michelle Obama, which aims to combat childhood obesity. The Mayor was introduced by President Larry Bacow. For more information on this topic go to the featured interview in the Fall 2010 edition of TuftScope.
At an award banquet Thursday night (4/29), the Tufts Office for Campus Life presented TuftScope with the Imagination Award (Innovation and Creativity Award), aimed at recognizing a student organization which has "successfully implemented an innovative way to fulfill its mission within the Tufts community".

This award reflects the achievements of all the journal staff involved in the implementation of the new format and expanded internet platform. Deserving of special recognition are the efforts of Max Leiserson (Associate Web Editor); Eriene-Heidi Sidhom (Associate News and Analysis Editor); Caroline Melhado (Associate Research Highlights Editor); Eliza Heath, Avigya Shrestha, Cole Archambault (Associate Manuscript & Layout Editors); and the extended writing team on the TuftScope Blog.
