Responses to Questions

(1) Can graduate students, faculty, or graduated students submit articles to the journal?

TuftScope welcomes and encourages all individuals to submit commentaries and academic articles to the journal.

(2) Can the submissions deadline be extended?

The Editorial Board will only extend the submissions deadline on a case by case basis and request that authors contact the Editorial Board at least one week prior to the deadline with this request.

(3) Is the Consent of Publication form absolutely required? Are all authors required to sign the form?

Yes, the form is required and must either be sent by mail, hand delivered, or signed, scanned, and emailed to TuftScope. Every author on the paper must sign the same form or send in a separate form.

(4) Can I subscribe to TuftScope?

Yes! Print subscriptions are available to individuals not on the Tufts University campuses for the nominal price of $5.00 per issue. Issues are available for free on Tufts University campuses. Institutional and public libraries can receive print editions or electronic subscriptions free of charge.

(5) Can I advertise in TuftScope or make a donation?

If you are interested in advertising in our journal or in making a donation to support our journal, please contact the current Editor in Chief at . TuftScope welcomes advertisements and donations from both the Tufts community and beyond. The journal is a non-profit entity and 100% of funding is used to support and enhance the publication of TuftScope.

(6) Is topic X or Y appropriate for the journal? Is the paper too longer or too short?

We publish a broad range of topics and paper lengths, but if you are concerned about your submission: (1) Refer to the submissions guidelines; (2) Contact us at if your question has not been adequately addressed by the guidelines.

(7) What types of citations are acceptable?

All major academic citations styles are accepted (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.). We strongly recommend the use of standard in-text numerical citation and discourage the use of the automatic footnote and endnote systems available in common word processing software. Examples of the numerical citation style are available in current issues of TuftScope (e.g. Spring 2009).

(8) Can I submit a Letter to the Editor?

TuftScope welcomes letters to the editor. If the letter concerns a specific paper or commentary it may be published on our weblog or website. Letters for publication should be no more than 500 words long and all references should be numerically cited. If you wish to submit a longer response, please feel free to send it as a commentary. The Editorial Board reserves the right to edit letters for length and style. Letters concerning general comments and questions are carefully considered and a response is provided within a reasonable period of time via email. In previous issues (pre-Fall 2006) the Commentary section was referred to broadly as the Correspondence section. All correspondence should be addressed to .

(9) How can I join the staff?

Tufts University undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty can join the staff by contacting us at . Our current list of staff positions is listed on the Journal Staff page.

(10) Can I reprint material available in TuftScope?

All articles published by TuftScope are open-access articles distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited and clear recognition is made that all material is copyright to TuftScope Journal and the authors.

(11) How are academic commentaries and articles reviewed? What is the turn around time for reviews?

TuftScope employs a double blind peer-review process for the review of all academic articles and commentaries, including science reports. An overview of the process is available on the Editorial Policy page. Acceptance of papers into TuftScope is highly competitive. Because many of our reviewers are faculty and students with activities and commitments outside of the journal, it may take from three to four weeks for decisions to reach authors regarding their submissions. We ask authors to be patient during the review process and thank them for understanding.
